Downhole Sand Control

Downhole Sand Control

After 30 years in the oil and gas industry, I am still amazed that sand, proppant and other associated solids are still causing us so many problems. Downhole sand control has been traditionally the way we controlled sand, by keeping the sand in the reservoir or at the bottom of the well. For years, it was an effective technique, that facilities engineers and operators in the field, were very happy with, because it meant the problem stayed downhole and they didn’t need to worry about it. Unfortunately, downhole sand control comes with a cost – you can lose up to 90-95% of the well’s productivity, it’s expensive to install and it doesn’t guarantee that all sand is stopped. There have been numerous failures, leading to major safety and integrity issues.” Michael Casper Gunningham (Petroleum Engineering Consultant with PetroKnowledge; with over 30 years’ experience around the word in oil and gas fields, both Greenfield developments to Brownfield production optimisation, re-development and well, reservoir and facility management)

Hence, the old practice of downhole sand control has gone through a major transformation, in terms of how to make it safer, more reliable and more productive. In addition, as oil companies work in a more integrated way, looking at business solutions, other alternatives have come onboard, which gives people more options to manage sand. Rather than just control it downhole. This process has had a significant impact in how oil and gas fields are run nowadays, making them safer, more productive and saving millions of dollars.

This PetroKnowledge training course on Integrated Sand Management takes a holistic approach to sand management, where the pros and cons of downhole sand control are balanced with managing safe levels of sand production to surface, to improve safety and integrity, optimise well production and deliver more value to your business.

This training course will highlight:

  • What is Integrated Sand Management
  • Basic design & operation considerations for sand control completions
  • How to select the preferred downhole sand control technique
  • Surface sand management options
  • Sand management strategy and plan
