CONTROL YOUR PROJECTS OR YOUR PROJECTS WILL CONTROL YOU

CONTROL YOUR PROJECTS OR YOUR PROJECTS WILL CONTROL YOU

Dr. Lane in Dubai on “how do you ensure that your projects are controlled effectively?”

Dubai, UAE (September 14, 2017) — This week, project professionals who attended a course from training leaders PetroKnowledge at The Fairmont Hotel in Dubai learned how the establishment of specific project governance structures combined with the application of standard project management practices can enable effective control of an organization’s projects.

Managing Project Control explored the nature and characteristics of projects so that these fundamental concepts may be leveraged to set up roles, responsibilities and workflows that support the management of projects in a controlled environment. Participants examined and performed many of the generally accepted project management practices that are presented in the ANSI standard PMI® book: A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®).

If the project environment enables the team to understand the project goal and their responsibilities in achieving it, this leads to a culture of control that benefits everybody” claims project management consultant, researcher and international trainer with PetroKnowledge, Dr. Michael Lane. “This course is about enabling project professionals to recognize an effective project environment and understand how practices such as chartering promote control and project success”.

Among the topics discussed were:

  • Effective Project Governance
  • Controlling project commencement
  • Establishing project baselines
  • Managing constraints
  • Reporting progress
  • Project control using Earned Value Management

Dr. Lane introduced each of the core topics using a lecture format. Presentations were supported by reinforcement exercises to emphasize the application of theory in real-world project settings. The course commenced with an overview of the nature of projects and the fundamentals of project management. This enabled delegates to reflect on how a project management framework supports effective control processes. The early sections of the course explained how to establish the work to be done and use this information to develop a comprehensive plan that guides different aspects of this work. Various techniques on how to control detailed planning of scope, schedule, cost and risk were introduced. Techniques on how best to control project execution were then explored. These techniques included variance analysis, change management and effective progress reporting.

Appropriately, the course finished with an introduction to the emerging project management lifecycle knows as “Adaptive Project Management”. Delegates learned to compare this technique with the traditional predictive project management approach. The adaptive approach is being used successfully to control situations where there is a lot of market volatility and rapidly changing requirements – a scenario that more and more of us face in the modern business environment!

Participants were from a wide range of organisations and locations including: Power Sector, Utility Companies and Oil & Energy Companies from the Middle East and Africa.
