Asset Corrosion Management for the Hydrocarbon Industry

Asset Corrosion Management for the Hydrocarbon Industry

The advent of the corrosion management concept could be traced back to the UK’s North Sea Offshore Hydrocarbon Industry in early 2000’s. Since then the concept itself has been evolving and its applications within the hydrocarbon industry (covering upstream, midstream and downstream) have been constantly growing.

Such phenomenal growth in corrosion management industrial applications has accordingly increased the demand for proper, thorough and practical corrosion management training courses worldwide.

One of the most popular corrosion management models currently in use in various countries is the Morshed Corrosion Management Model initially introduced by Ali Morshed (PhD, CEng, MSc, DIC) in his first book published by NACE International back in 2012. This model comprises three processes which form an overall simple process loop. The main attributes of the Morshed Corrosion Management Model are:

  • It consists of three simple, straightforward and easy-to-apply processes; namely: the integrity review process, the performance monitoring process and the effectiveness assessing process.
  • It is applicable to all upstream, midstream and downstream sectors of the hydrocarbon
  • It also covers the non-corrosion engineering-based integrity measures (such as inspection, data management, communication and competency) alongside the corrosion engineering-based ones (such as design and materials selection).
  • It is also applicable to the non-hydrocarbon industries (such as water and waste water management, chemicals, marine, nuclear and defence).

Proper implementation of this model could bring about various benefits including:

  1. Improving the corrosion failure pre-emption capability of the company
  2. Optimising corrosion and integrity costs
  3. Lowering deterioration rates; thus, extending asset operational life
  4. Enhancing communication and reporting
  5. Improving personnel safety and environmental protection

It is such application benefits which make the corrosion management training course highly imperative and recommended for any interested individual associated with the hydrocarbon industry.
