When it comes to valve sizing, the valve coefficient plays a very important role. This is defined as the number of United States gallons of water per minute, at 60°F, that will pass through a wide-open valve that has a pressure drop of 1 psi.  This information will usually be provided (in a tabulated form) by the manufacturers.

That is all fair and well, in countries that use the above units. However, many companies prefer other values of measurement. For example, they may prefer to measure flow in cubic meters per minute, prefer to work in degrees Celsius, and prefer to measure pressure drop in either bar or kilopascals.
